Before You Invest: Do You Really Understand Your Own Money?
Before choosing a mutual fund or any investment, start with seven simple questions about your money. The first post in Deft Services’ Money Matters series.
Introduction
Ask most people how their investing journey began, and the answer usually starts with a product. It could be a mutual fund that delivered strong returns, a stock a friend mentioned, or an investment scheme that everyone seemed to be discussing.
But before choosing any investment, there is a more fundamental question worth asking: Do I understand my own money?
Investing is not simply about identifying a product that has performed well. It is about finding investments that fit your financial goals, responsibilities, time horizon and ability to handle risk.
Why Understanding Your Money Comes First
Your financial situation is unique. The amount you can invest, the goals you are working towards, the time available to achieve them and the level of market volatility you can tolerate all influence how your money should be approached.
That is why the first step is not necessarily “Which mutual fund should I buy?” It is: “What do I need my money to do for me?”
Seven Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Invest
Where is my money going?
Track your spending for a month or two. It shows what is realistically available to invest.
How much can I comfortably invest each month?
Choose an amount you can sustain without straining your budget or touching essentials.
What am I investing for?
A home, education, retirement and a holiday have different timelines and needs.
How long can I stay invested?
The time you can leave money untouched matters a great deal.
How much risk am I comfortable with?
Think about how you would feel and react when markets move.
Do I have enough emergency savings?
A cushion helps you avoid breaking long-term investments when something unexpected happens.
What commitments do I already have?
EMIs, insurance premiums and family responsibilities affect what you can take on.
No One-Size-Fits-All Answer
Two people of the same age and income can have very different goals, responsibilities and comfort with risk. That is why understanding your own situation comes before any product.
What Does This Mean for Investors?
Before evaluating a mutual fund, PMS, AIF or any other investment product, take a step back and understand the financial picture behind the decision. The product comes at the end of this thought process — not necessarily at the beginning.
